Admiral, there be whales here! Not quite the kind of whales you’re probably thinking of, but a whale of a time, threefold. You see, Greg Cox’s ambitious new Star Trek novel, Lost to Eternity, alternates between three time periods: a storyline set in 2024, with a true crime podcaster investigating the disappearance of Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home’s Gillian Taylor; an adventure during the Enterprise’s five-year mission from Star Trek: The Original Series; and a Saavik-heavy storyline that also involves diplomacy, Klingons, Romulans, and the Enterprise-A shortly before Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. About the latter era, Cox notes, “That’s about the only time you can insert an original-movie-era novel.” I recently enjoyed interviewing the author on a deep-dive discussion about his new book.
