Thomas Eugene “Gene” DeWeese was the author of several Star Trek: The Next Generation novels. Apart from his work on Star Trek novels, and in science fiction, DeWeese published work in a number of other genres including fantasy, Gothic, romance, mystery, suspense, and horror novels, and also non-fiction books on technology and folk art. He began his writing career as a science fiction fandom writer, publishing in fanzines.

DeWeese was born in Rochester, Indiana. In 1959, he moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin and stayed there for the rest of his life. He graduated in electronics, and did a lot of technical writing, including for the Apollo program. He used ideas from his own writings for the Star Trek novels, and adapted them into the franchise.

Other science fiction franchises he wrote for included The Man from U.N.C.L.E. and Lost in Space.

He died in 2012 from dementia with Lewy bodies. He left some of his papers to the University of Southern Mississippi, including those dealing with the period in which he wrote Star Trek works.
